India may be the most populous country in the world, but the birth rate in many South Indian states is very low. Governments have also started efforts to correct this. In this series, Andhra Pradesh will provide financial assistance of Rs 25 thousand on the birth of the second and third child. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu said that if a family has a second or third child, the government will give Rs 25,000 at the time of delivery. He said that this scheme will prove to be a big game changer in increasing the birth rate.
Speaking in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly on Thursday, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu introduced the state’s proposed Population Management Policy. He said that currently about 58% families have only one child, about 2.17 lakh families have two children, and about 62 lakh families have three or more children. He also said that about three lakh families have only one child instead of two, while another three lakh families have more than two children.
Fertility rate of Andhra Pradesh is currently 1.5
The Chief Minister said that the total fertility rate of the state is currently 1.5, whereas the ideal level should be 2.1 to maintain demographic balance. He said that as the economy grows, the birth rate begins to decline, which could lead to workforce shortages and long-term economic challenges.
Financial assistance will be provided on the birth of children
To deal with the possible situation of low population, the government is proposing to provide financial incentives for child birth. Under this plan, parents who have second or more children will get ₹25,000 at the time of delivery. Naidu described the move as a major policy intervention to boost population growth.
