128 journalists killed across the world in 2025, know how many deaths in Palestine and India

New Delhi: A total of 128 journalists and media workers died in 2025 worldwide. According to the final report of the International Federation of Journalists i.e. IFJ, the maximum number of deaths of journalists occurred in the Middle East and the Arab world. The IFJ report said that 74 journalists were killed in the Middle East and the Arab world, which is about 58 percent of the total deaths. Of these, the highest number of 56 deaths have occurred in Palestine while reporting during the Gaza war alone.

A total of 56 journalists died in Palestine

“The Middle East and the Arab world has a horrific record of deaths of journalists in 2025, with 74 deaths,” the report said. Palestinian journalists have paid the highest price, as IFJ recorded 56 deaths in the Gaza war. The most famous case was on August 10, when Al Jazeera reporter Anas al-Sharif was targeted and attacked. He was in the journalists’ tent outside Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, where 5 other journalists and media workers also died along with him.

4 journalists die in India in 2025

While releasing the report, IFJ said that out of total 128 deaths, 9 deaths were due to accidents and 10 women were also among those who died. The report also confirmed that 17 additional cases were reported since December 10, increasing the previously provisional number from 111 to 128. At the same time, 13 journalists were killed in Yemen, 8 in Ukraine, and 6 in Sudan. 4 deaths each were recorded in India and Peru. Apart from this, 3 journalists each were killed in many other countries like Pakistan, Mexico, Philippines and Peru.

143 journalists were jailed in China

According to the report, 15 journalists died in the Asia-Pacific region. The region remains the largest prison system for journalists in the world, with a total of 277 media workers in prison. Of these, a total of 143 journalists are in jail in China including Hong Kong, which is the highest in the world. After this, 49 journalists are in jail in Myanmar and 37 in Vietnam. At the same time, 10 journalists died in Europe in 2025, out of which 8 deaths occurred in Ukraine. A total of 9 journalists were killed in Africa, including 6 deaths in Sudan. 11 deaths were recorded in the Americas, with Peru having the highest number of deaths at 4.

‘Journalists are being targeted’

Since starting its annual death list in 1990, IFJ has recorded a total of 3173 journalist deaths worldwide. IFJ General Secretary Anthony Belanger said these figures show a global crisis. He has appealed to the governments to take immediate action on this issue. He said, ‘This is a global crisis. These deaths are a reminder that journalists are being targeted for their work. Governments must take action now to protect journalists, bring murderers to justice and maintain press freedom. The world cannot wait any longer.
