New Delhi: After coming into government in 2014, PM Modi launched the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan vigorously. This mission was launched 11 years ago on October 2, 2014, on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Due to the Swachh Bharat Mission, there has been a significant change in the cleanliness of the country during the 11 years of PM Modi’s tenure. The objective of the mission was to eliminate open defecation, improve solid and liquid waste management and maintain the dignity and health of citizens, especially women and the rural poor. Subsequently, Phase-2 was launched in April 2020. Focus was on maintaining ODF status in the open and achieving ODF Plus through better solid and liquid waste management i.e. SLWM. By March 17, 2025, more than 5.64 lakh villages out of 5 lakh 86 thousand villages declared themselves open defecation free.
