A new chapter has been added on Monday towards the security of India’s maritime borders and environmental protection. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday formally commissioned the country’s first indigenous pollution control vessel ‘Samudra Pratap’ into the service of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) in Vasco, South Goa.
Officials said that this vessel is built by ‘Goa Shipyard Limited’. The total length of this 114.5 meter ship has more than 60 percent indigenous material. The vessel weighs 4,200 tonnes and has a speed of over 22 knots. The ship will play an important role in enforcing marine pollution control regulations, maritime law enforcement, search and rescue operations and security of India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The vessel was formally handed over to the Coast Guard at GSL in December.
“When heritage is shared, responsibility is also shared.”
Defense Minister Singh on Monday commissioned this ship at GSL based in Vasco, South Goa. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Union Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and ICG Director General Parmesh Shivmani were present on the occasion. “India believes that marine resources are not the property of any one country, but are the common heritage of humanity,” Singh said. He said, “When heritage is shared, responsibility is also shared. That is why India has become a responsible maritime power today.” Singh also said that it is his government’s aim to ensure adequate participation of women.
He said, “I am happy that moving forward in this direction, the Coast Guard has paid full attention to women empowerment and it is a matter of pride for us.” He said that women officers have been appointed on important responsibilities like pilots, observers, air traffic controllers and logistics officers. He said, “Not only this, they are being trained in ‘hovercraft’ operations. They are being actively deployed in frontline operations. Today women are not only in supporting roles, but are also in service as frontline warriors.” ICG said in a statement that the induction of ‘Samudra Pratap’ into service is a major step towards India’s ‘self-reliance’ in ship and maritime capability development.
