New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given a big statement on Wednesday on the commissioning of Indian Coast Guard ship ICGS Samudra Pratap. He has called it a strong step towards India’s self-reliance. PM Modi said that this ship strengthens our security system and shows our commitment towards environmental protection. ICGS Samudra Pratap is the first of the 2 pollution control ships built by Goa Shipyard Limited i.e. GSL, which was commissioned by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on January 5.
‘This strengthens our vision of self-reliance’
PM Modi wrote on ‘X’, ‘Commissioning of ICGS Samudra Pratap is important for many reasons. It strengthens our vision of self-reliance, boosts our security system and reflects our commitment to environmental protection. ICGS Samudra Pratap is the largest and most modern ship ever commissioned for the Indian Coast Guard. It is built by Goa Shipyard Limited located in Vasco da Gama. Construction of ICGS Samudra Pratap began on 23 February 2022. This ship has been specially built to deal with pollution in the sea.
The fire fighting system of this ship is also special
ICGS Samudra Pratap has modern pollution control systems, such as side-sweeping arms, high-capacity oil recovery systems, floating booms, advanced skimmers, a dedicated pollution control laboratory and portable barges to contain, collect and store oil spills. To enhance maritime safety and fire-fighting capability, the ship is equipped with a powerful external fire fighting system (Fi-Fi Class 2), which can tackle large fires on other ships or offshore installations. This can provide initial help in maritime emergencies.
ICGS Samudra Pratap is equipped with many other features
The ship is equipped with several modern automation and navigation systems, such as Dynamic Positioning System, Integrated Bridge System, Integrated Platform Management System and Automated Power Management System, which ensure accuracy, backup and efficiency in difficult missions. For maritime security operations, the ship is armed with 30 MM CRN-91 gun and 2 12.7 MM stabilized remote-controlled guns, linked to an advanced fire-control system. With her advanced technology and pollution-control and firefighting capabilities, ICGS Samudra Pratap is a living testament to India’s maritime self-reliance, shipbuilding excellence and commitment to ocean conservation and national security. More than 60 percent indigenous material in the ship
ICGS Samudra Pratap will be manned by 14 officers and 115 personnel and will be deployed at Kochi. Commissioning of a Coast Guard ship marks the beginning of its active operational life. The induction of ICGS Samudra Pratap will enhance the operational strength of the Indian Coast Guard and strengthen its maritime safety, security and environmental protection capabilities. It is the first indigenously built pollution control ship of the Indian Coast Guard. It has more than 60 percent indigenous content. The ship will play an important role in enforcing marine pollution control regulations, maritime law enforcement, search and rescue operations. It is equipped with advanced systems to detect oil leaks.
