Dhule: AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi has targeted Congress for the stringent provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. He strongly criticized the alleged role of Congress in amending UAPA. He alleged that when P. Chidambaram was the Union Home Minister, the Congress had amended the UAPA. For this reason, many undertrial prisoners including Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam are being kept in jail for a long time.
Targeted on Congress for UAPA
Speaking at the event in Dhule, Asaduddin Owaisi said, ‘The Supreme Court did not grant bail to the two undertrial accused and the court also gave an explanation of the reasons for not granting bail. UAPA was amended during the Congress-led UPA government and the definition of terrorism was included in it.
What is this in Section 43D of UAPA?
Owaisi said that the basis for denying bail to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam is the same as he himself had stated in his Lok Sabha speech. Referring to Section 43D of UAPA, he said, it allows detention for 180 days without charge sheet. Under this, minorities are being kept in jail for maximum days.
There is a huge difference between truth and expectations – Owaisi
He further said, ‘I had said that the ground reality is that there is a huge difference between truth and expectations. The man in uniform has a feeling of hatred. According to Muslim belief this is a truth. I can say with full confidence that he will be detained for 180 days.
Why did Owaisi give such a statement?
It is noteworthy that this statement of Owaisi has come after the Supreme Court rejected the bail applications of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam on Monday. This case is related to the conspiracy of 2020 Delhi riots. However, the Supreme Court has granted bail to Meeran Haider, Gulfisha Fatima, Shifa Ur Rehman, Shadab Ahmed and Mohammad Salim Khan.
