India is currently stuck between two extremes regarding weather. On one hand, North India is experiencing bone-chilling cold and is wrapped in a blanket of dense fog, while on the other hand, South India is under the threat of a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal, due to which there is a possibility of heavy rains.

Talking about North India, it is record breaking cold from the plains to the mountains. According to the Meteorological Department, conditions of severe cold, cold wave and dense fog will persist in North and Central India.

According to the Meteorological Department (IMD), dense morning fog is likely over Northwest India and Bihar during the next 5-7 days while over Central India, Northeast India and parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during the next 2-3 days. At the same time, cold day conditions are likely to prevail in some areas of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh during the next 2-3 days.

In contrast to the cold of the North, trouble is coming from the sea in South India. Due to the deep depression formed over the Bay of Bengal, there is a strong possibility of heavy to very heavy rain in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka on January 10 and 11. The Meteorological Department has also warned of rain in Arunachal Pradesh.

Chill in Delhi-NCR and plains

Cold has started showing its presence even in the country’s capital Delhi. The coldest morning of this winter was recorded in Delhi-NCR on Friday, where the minimum temperature reached an all-time low. IMD has warned that cold wave conditions will prevail in Delhi in the coming days and due to the effect of western disturbance, there may be light drizzle in some areas.

The coming days are going to be mixed for the people of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. While the situation of ‘cold day’ will prevail in Bihar on January 10 and 11, Uttar Pradesh is expected to get slight relief from cold and fog due to light sunshine in the next two days.

However, the cold wave will not subside in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. There is a possibility of severe cold wave in Rajasthan from 11 to 14 January. On the other hand, in hilly states like Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, there are chances of heavy frost along with icy winds, which may affect normal life and crops.

Cold havoc in Kashmir, will continue till January 29

Kashmir valley is currently going through its harshest winter period called ‘Chilla-e-Kalan’. Srinagar recorded the coldest night of this season on Friday night, due to which many parts of the world famous Dal Lake completely froze. According to the Meteorological Department, this snowy period will continue till January 29. The weather is expected to remain dry till January 21, due to which an even steeper drop in night temperatures may be seen. Only after this, there is a possibility of a slight increase of one to two degrees in the minimum temperature.
