Google and Apple have been urged to remove X-Grok from the App Store

What is the news?

Controversy is growing over the use of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot Grok on Elon Musk-owned social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Due to this, pressure has increased on Apple and Google to remove X and Grok apps from their app stores. 3 Democratic senators in the US have written letters to both the companies urging them to remove both the apps until Musk resolves these problems.

Increasing protest over racist pictures

Senators Ron Wyden, Ed Markey and Ben Ray Lujan have written letters to Apple Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tim Cook and Google CEO Sundar Pichai. He cited reports that Grok and X allow users to create and share pornographic images without consent. Senators also pointed to examples of racially and ethnically offensive images created using AI.

Investigations are being conducted in many countries

Many international regulators in Europe, Australia, Malaysia and India started investigating Greece for making pornographic images. Musk and Ax said earlier this month that users who encourage Grok to create illegal content will face the same consequences as those who upload such content. Recently the facility to create images from Grok has been limited to paid customers. Critics have described these measures as inadequate.
