What is the news?

A big scam has come to light from Madhya Pradesh. Here, a government research conducted on the treatment of cancer through cow related products is under question. It is alleged that the officials spent about Rs 3.5 crore received from the state government for research on wrong activities like traveling and buying a car. Now the investigating agencies are busy finding out where this money was spent.

What is the matter?

This matter pertains to Nanaji Deshmukh Veterinary Sciences University located in Jabalpur. In the year 2011, the university had demanded Rs 8 crore from the government under the Panchgavya scheme. This money was to be used in research on the treatment of diseases like cancer using 5 elements obtained from cows (dung, cow urine, milk). The government allocated Rs 3.5 crore to the university, but it has now come to light that the money was not used for its intended purpose.

Bought cow dung and urine for Rs 1.9 crore

Investigation revealed that unnecessary expenditure was incurred on many things. According to the report, around Rs 1.9 crore was spent on cow dung, cow urine, raw materials, storage vessels and machinery, while investigating officials believe that the cost of these things should not be more than Rs 15-20 lakh. An investigation into the matter was initiated after a recent complaint was received by the district administration. These irregularities have come to light.

Officers visited Goa with research money

The investigation revealed that the officials made 24 air trips between 2012 and 2018. The officer visited Goa and Bengaluru several times. It is not known whether these trips were made for research related work or not. It has also been revealed that a vehicle worth around Rs 7.5 lakh was purchased, which was not part of the original plan. The same amount was spent on fuel and maintenance of the vehicle.

SDM said – Prima facie there seems to be some disturbance.

Jabalpur SDM Raghuveer Singh Maravi said that at first glance it seems that the money received for research was spent on other works. He said, “It was also said that training would be given to the farmers, but it is not clear what kind of training was given. Some purchased vehicles were not found on the spot and many expenses were not even accounted for properly.” At present, investigation is going on with the university officials.
