What is the news?

UP Warriors (UPW) captain Meg Lanning made a big record in the second match of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 against Gujarat Giants (GG). Lanning scored 30 runs in 27 balls and his total in WPL reached 981 runs. With this, she became the second highest run-scorer in the history of this tournament, leaving behind Ellyse Perry. However, his team had to face defeat in the match.

Only Nat Sciver-Brunt ahead of Lanning

Lanning is now just a few runs away from becoming the highest run-scorer in the WPL. Mumbai Indians (MI)’s Nat Sciver-Brunt tops the list with more than 1,000 runs, averaging around 45. She is the only player in the tournament who has crossed the 1,000-run mark. She achieved this feat in the 2025 edition and became the first batsman to score more than 500 runs in an edition.

Lanning’s figures are like this

UPW captain Lanning is an example of consistency in the WPL. Before this, she was a part of Delhi Capitals (DC) for 3 editions, where she scored 952 runs in 27 matches and with her brilliant batting, she took the team to the finals every season. However, DC released him before 2026, after which UPW selected him as the captain. Lanning has scored 982 runs in 28 matches at an average of 39.28, which includes 9 half-centuries.

Perry is not part of this version

Perry ended his third consecutive season with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in style. He scored 972 runs at an average of 64.80, which included 8 half-centuries and played an important role in helping the team win the title in 2024. Despite being retained for WPL 2026, Perry withdrew from the tournament due to personal reasons. The current edition started on January 9 and will run till February 5.

This is how GG won the match

Batting first, GG scored 207/4. In reply, UPW could only score 197/8 runs. Ashley Gardner top scored for GG with 65 runs. Apart from him, Anushka Sharma played an inning of 44 runs. Sophie Ecclestone took 2 wickets. UPW suffered initial setbacks, but Phoebe Litchfield (78) and Shweta Sehrawat (25) brought the team back. However, even his innings could not help the team win.
