The harsh winter in the states of North India has completely disrupted life. Severe cold wave was witnessed in neighboring states including Delhi. The first and most severe cold wave of this season was recorded in the national capital Delhi, where the minimum temperature dropped to 2.9 degrees Celsius in Ayanagar.
According to the Meteorological Department (IMD), the record of the last 13 years has been broken at Palam station in Delhi, where the mercury was recorded at 3.0 degrees Celsius. The temperature in Safdarjung Observatory was also 2.6 degrees below normal i.e. 4.8 degrees Celsius. Due to severe cold and icy winds, the Meteorological Department has issued ‘Yellow Alert’ for the next two days.
Severe winter in Rajasthan
The situation in Rajasthan is even more serious, where the temperature in the desert areas has gone below zero. The minimum temperature was recorded at minus 2 degrees (-2°C) in Pratapgarh, while it was minus 1 degree (-1°C) in Barmer. Even in cities like Pilani, Sikar and Churu, the mercury remained between 1 to 2 degrees. Dew drops have started freezing in most parts of the state and people are forced to remain confined to their homes due to the severe cold. In Jaipur too, Sunday morning was very cold with a temperature of 9.2 degrees Celsius and the department has indicated that there will be no relief yet.
The condition is worse due to cold in these states too
The situation in Punjab and Haryana also remains close to the ‘congestion point’. Bathinda in Punjab was the coldest place in the state at 1.6 degrees Celsius. At the same time, the minimum temperature was recorded at 2.2 degrees Celsius in Hisar, Haryana. Along with the severe cold, the dense fog in the morning has also put brakes on the speed of traffic. Drivers faced a lot of trouble due to low visibility in cities like Amritsar, Ludhiana and Patiala. The temperature remains well below zero in many areas of the hill states of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, due to which the coming cold winds are increasing the cold in the plains.
