Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz held bilateral talks in Gandhinagar, Gujarat today, in which both the leaders pledged to take the India-Germany strategic partnership to new heights. This is the first official visit of German Chancellor Merz to India, which coincides with the completion of 75 years of diplomatic relations and 25 years of strategic partnership between the two countries.
Talks took place in the fields of defence, economy and technology
The two leaders issued a joint statement and signed several important agreements, the major ones being in defence, economy, technology and education sectors. PM Modi said in the joint press conference, ‘Close cooperation between the economies of countries like India and Germany is important not only for both the nations, but for the entire humanity. We have decided to make the economic partnership ‘limitless’, which includes strategic sectors like defence, space and critical technology.
Joint statement of India and Germany
The two leaders strongly condemned terrorism and violent extremism in all its forms and manifestations, including cross-border terrorism. They called for coordinated international efforts to fight terrorism in a comprehensive and sustainable manner, in accordance with the United Nations Charter and international law.
Strong condemnation of terrorist incidents
He strongly condemned the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir on 22 April 2025 and the terrorist incident in Delhi on 10 November 2025. They resolved to strengthen cooperation against terrorists and terrorist organizations, including those listed on the UN 1267 Sanctions Committee.
Call to dismantle the structure of terrorist bases
Both sides also called on all countries to continue working towards dismantling terrorist safe havens and infrastructure, as well as disrupting terrorist networks and financing, in accordance with international law. The leaders welcomed the ratification of the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty and noted progress made under the Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism.
Indo-Pacific issue was also discussed
The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific, respect for international law, including UNCLOS. Also announced a new bilateral Indo-Pacific consultation mechanism. India welcomed Germany’s continued and growing engagement in the region, including activities under the capacity building and resource sharing pillar of the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI) co-led by India and Germany.
