‘Identity’ of former Navy Chief Admiral Arun Prakash will have to be proved, Election Commission notice

Goa: 1971 India-Pakistan war hero and Vir Chakra awardee Admiral Arun Prakash, who has been living in Goa for the last 20 years, has received a notice from the Election Commission. In this notice he has been asked to appear before the election officer to verify his identity.

According to Agna Cleetus, District Collector and Returning Officer, South Goa, Admiral Prakash’s name falls in the ‘unmapped’ category as his details were not present in the voters’ list updated since 2002.

Admiral Arun Prakash’s response

The former Navy Chief expressed his views through the social media platform ‘X’. He said that his and his wife’s names already appear in the Goa Draft Electoral Roll 2026, yet they were served notices. He said that if the current SIR forms are not able to capture the required information, they should be reformed.

The 82-year-old Admiral said he and his 78-year-old wife have been called to appear on separate dates, 18 kilometers apart, which is not feasible at his age. He said that they are not demanding any special privileges and will comply with the Commission’s notice.

Questions raised on social media

After this news came to light, former military officers and common citizens raised questions on the functioning of the Election Commission. Retired Lieutenant Colonel T.S. Anand and other users argued that the government already had Admiral’s PPO (pension payment order) and life certificate in the database. In such a situation, identification could be done by pressing some keys on the keyboard.

Many people believe that in the case of such a senior officer and war hero, the SIR team should have gone to his house for verification and not called him to the office. District Collector Agna Cleetus has said that she will check Admiral’s enumeration form on Monday and the officials will personally contact him.
