There was panic in Odisha’s capital Bhubaneswar on Monday when a major lapse in security arrangements came to light during the presence of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. The incident took place at the Utkal University campus, where the Chief Minister had come to attend a program organized on the occasion of National Youth Day. During the programme, suddenly a young man started moving towards the Chief Minister with a paper in his hand.

Security personnel showed vigilance

Seeing a young man moving towards the Chief Minister, there was chaos at the venue for a few moments. However, the security personnel deployed at the spot immediately showed alertness and stopped the young man midway and took him aside. The Chief Minister was also shocked for some time by this unexpected incident, but due to the promptness of the security agencies the situation was immediately brought under control. After this the program concluded normally.

Why did the young man do this?

According to police sources, the detained youth has been identified as Bijay Kumar Mallik, 36, resident of Bhadrak. The accused has contested elections from Bhandaripokhari assembly constituency of Bhadrak district in the year 2024. He had got the MLA ticket from Odisha Janata Party. The accused was trying to enter the outer circle of security. The paper he was holding had a demand for re-implementation of the SSB exam written on it. On the paper he had written “SSB Exam Our Demand”. The accused reportedly says that the SSB examination has not been held for a long time and he wanted to convey his views to the Chief Minister regarding this issue.

Police interrogation revealed that he had come to the university canteen to eat food. During this time he got information that the Chief Minister was going to attend the programme. After this he immediately wrote his demand on a paper and proceeded towards the venue to hand it over to the Chief Minister. The accused also told the police that he had studied PG in History from the same Utkal University about 10 years ago. Also, he himself has given SSB exam many times.

Police is interrogating the young man

At present, the police is interrogating the accused thoroughly after this incident and trying to find out what was his intention behind trying to break the security cordon. The youth is still in custody and investigation into the case is ongoing. (Report: Shubham Kumar)
