Already memes and songs about Gilly are doing the rounds on social media. Some auto drivers have announced that they will provide free auto service in the name of Gili. The overall Gilly craze is strong. By the way, did you know that there is also biryani in the name of Gilli? But this ‘Gilli Biryani’ is not available in Bangalore but in Chennai. But Bigg Boss Gilli is not related to Chennai’s Gilli Biryani, but Superstar Rajinikanth is directly related to that biryani. What is Gilli Biryani, why was that biryani named Gilli? Read the information here…

Gilli Biryani is a different kind of biryani that is only available in Chennai. This gilli biryani is served at Taj Coromandel in Chennai. Unlike other biryani, this biryani is not crumbly or dry, rather it is like a hot gram bath, but it has the same taste as biryani. This biryani was first discovered in the 1990s in the Taj Coromandel. Superstar Rajinikanth is responsible for this quest.

Ram Mohan, who was the then chef at the Taj, made this Gilli Biryani for Rajinikanth. As he himself said, Rajinikanth used to come to Taj Coromandel a lot. Especially as their dinner was done there. Whenever Rajinikanth goes there, he usually eats poori with chicken or mutton gravy. But one night Rajinikanth came at around one o’clock and said to Chef Ram Mohan, ‘I feel like eating biryani’. But the biryani should not be heavy, because it is eaten late at night, make biryani which is easy to digest.’

This has become a challenge for Chef Ram Mohan. Realizing that biryani is not easy to digest because it is loose, the chef added a thin, not too spicy mutton gravy to the biryani and steamed it. Rajinikanth served it to him. Rajinikanth liked it very much. Later Rajinikanth used to ask for the same biryani every time he came. After that, some of his friends also got it and Taj added it to the menu.

By the way, it is a bit strange that biryani got the name Gilli. Some call it ‘Geela Biryani’ because gravy is added to biryani. Geela means wet in Hindi. But later Geela became Gilli, ‘Gilli Biryani’. Even after 30 years, Gilli Biryani is served at Taj Coromandel. Now a plate of Gilli Biryani costs 1300 rupees.
