Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha
New Delhi: Rajya Sabha MP and Aam Aadmi Party leader Raghav Chadha raised the issue of ‘food adulteration’ in Parliament. He also shared the video of his speech in Parliament on his
What did Raghav say during his speech in Parliament?
Raghav Chadha said during his speech in Parliament, “Sir, today I want to talk about a topic which is related to the health of the people. The issue of adulteration in food, which is an important part of food. Sir, fake products are being sold in the market by labeling them as pure. Milk, spices, edible oils, packaged foods and beverages contain unsafe ingredients, harmful chemicals, high saturated fat, sugar or salt. Also, misleading nutritional claims. They are being sold saying they are good for health and energy boosting.”
Raghav Chadha said, “Sir, the situation is that if you buy milk, it contains urea, oxytocin in vegetables, starch and caustic soda in cheese, detergent powder in ice cream, synthetic flavors in fruit juice, artificial colors, machine oil in edible oil, brick powder and wood sawdust in hot spices, synthetic colors in tea, anabolic steroids in chicken or poultry items, honey. Sugar syrup and yellow dye, even desi ghee which is supposed to be sweet, is made from vegetable oils and vanaspati.”
Mother is feeding urea or detergent mix to her child, she is not aware: Raghav
Raghav Chadha said, “Sir, just imagine that if a mother gives a glass of milk to her child, thinking that it contains calcium, protein and my child will become fit, then she does not know that she is feeding a mixture of urea or detergent to her child. Sir, research shows that 71% of milk samples contain urea, 64% of the samples contain neutralizers like sodium bicarbonate. Here Milk production is not as much as milk is being sold.”
Raghav said, “Sir, if you buy vegetables or any other vegetable which we consider as health food, it is sold after injecting oxytocin so that it looks fresh, green and its growth is faster. Oxytocin is a harmful chemical which causes diseases like dizziness, headache, heart failure, infertility, cancer. Sir, all the samples tested from 2014-15 to 2026, 25% of the samples were found to be adulterated, meaning one in every four samples was adulterated, I don’t know how many people fell ill, went to the hospital or lost their lives.”
Food items which are not even fed to animals in other countries are being sold here: Raghav
Raghav said, “Sir, food adulteration is a serious health crisis, it is especially dangerous for children, elderly, women, pregnant women. What is more surprising is that the products made in India which are banned at the international level, like the two biggest garam masala manufacturing companies of this country got banned in the US and UK because they contain cancer-causing pesticides, those spices are also being sold and bought in India today, we should not be allowed to consume them. The situation is such that food items which are not even fed to animals in other countries are being sold here.
Raghav said, “I have brought some suggestions in this regard. First suggestion is FSSAI, strengthen our regulator, provide adequate manpower, promote lab testing. Second, the fine or penalty should be made financially manageable, there is a need to increase it. Third, there should be a public recall mechanism, if any product is adulterated then name and shame it publicly, remove it from the market and stop advertising with misleading health claims.”
