Mobile phones have been completely banned in all the schools of Himachal Pradesh from March 1.

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu on Thursday announced that there will be a complete ban on the use of mobile phones by students in all government and private schools in the state. This ban will come into effect from March 1, 2026. This announcement was made during the closing ceremony of the 69th National School Games (Under-19 Girls Handball Tournament) at Ghumarwin in Bilaspur district. The Chief Minister said that the state government is committed to providing world class education capable of competing at the international level.

‘Mobile phone will be confiscated, fine will be imposed’

Giving information about the strict rules, Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu said that if any student is found with a mobile phone, he will be fined Rs 500 and the phone will be confiscated. Additionally, parents will have to attend mandatory counseling sessions at the school. To ensure compliance with the rules in the long run, the Education Department has been directed to prepare a Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) so that action can be taken against repeat violators.

The Chief Minister said, ‘It has been observed that the use of mobile phones during lunch break and school hours distracts students from studies and hinders their interaction and personal development.’ Referring to his experience of studying in a government school, Sukhu reiterated his commitment to give priority to the quality of education. On this occasion, the Chief Minister also emphasized on the state’s efforts to promote sports and sports tourism. He announced that women players from Himachal Pradesh who have participated in the Asian Games will be given government job opportunities.

He also announced a reward of Rs 20 lakh for the Himachal Pradesh team winning the National Handball Championship. The Chief Minister said that the work of indoor stadium and local school building in Ghumarwin will be completed expeditiously in the next one year. Besides, he also announced construction of a new girls hostel in Morsingi. The 69th National School Games concluded with the Himachal Pradesh team winning the gold medal. Himachal defeated Rajasthan in the final, while Haryana secured third place. 30 teams from across the country participated in this tournament.
