New Delhi: India is also planning to sell Dornier aircraft during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Malaysia. Let us tell you that PM Modi is going on a 2-day official visit to Malaysia on 7-8 February. During this period, there are possibilities of greater cooperation in the defense sector between India and Malaysia. Giving this information on Thursday, External Affairs Ministry Secretary (East) Periyasamy Kumaran said that India is planning to discuss the sale of Dornier aircraft to Malaysia, midlife upgrade of Scorpene submarines and maintenance and retrofitting of Su-30 aircraft.

‘Eye on sale of Dornier aircraft’

P. Kumaran said, ‘There is a lot of potential in terms of defense cooperation. We are keeping an eye on the sales of Dornier aircraft. Malaysia also has Scorpene submarines and is looking for cooperation in midlife upgrade and retrofitting. He further said that both the countries have Su-30 aircraft, hence India has made proposals for their retrofitting and midlife maintenance. Apart from this, the possibility of supply of naval platforms from Indian shipyards is also being explored.

Strong defense ties between India and Malaysia

Let us tell you that India-Malaysia defense relations have been strengthening for the last several years. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Defense Cooperation signed in 1993 is the foundation of defense relations between the two countries. The agreement allows for enhanced cooperation in areas such as joint ventures, joint development projects, procurement, logistics, maintenance support and training. This visit of Prime Minister Modi is taking place 1.5 years after the relations between the two countries were taken to the level of Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during the visit of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to India in August 2024.

Malaysia is an important partner of India

Malaysia is a key partner in India’s Act East Policy, Vision MAHASAGAR and Indo-Pacific Vision. The visit will also enhance India’s engagement with the ASEAN region, as Malaysia is a founding member of ASEAN and is holding its chair in 2025. The two Prime Ministers will hold bilateral discussions during the visit and review the progress under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Mainly during this period, discussions can be held on trade, investment, defence, security, semiconductor, digital technology, renewable energy, education, healthcare etc.
