New Delhi: Today, February 7, passengers across India may face problems in their travel plans, as drivers associated with app-based ride platforms Ola, Uber and Rapido have called for a strike across the country. This strike has been named ‘All India Breakdown’. This strike has been called to demand government intervention on minimum fares and strict rules on the use of private vehicles for commercial rides. This strike will continue for six hours.

Why have Uber, Ola drivers gone on strike

This strike has been done jointly by Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) and other national labor bodies. The union says there is no minimum fare. No regulation. They are troubled by the never-ending exploitation. In a letter to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, the union raised the problems faced by app-based transport workers across the country. The union said that the government does not have any fixed fare system for riders working on Ola, Uber, Rapido, Porter and other aggregator platforms running auto, cab and bike taxis, hence the companies decide the fare themselves.

The union said that the aggregator platforms themselves are deciding the fares, while the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines, 2025 are already in place. The union said that despite the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines 2025, the platforms are fixing the fare arbitrarily. Our demands are clear: Notify the minimum base fare. Stop misuse of private vehicles for commercial rides.

Drivers’ earnings decreased

According to the union, due to the lack of minimum fare notified by the government, drivers’ earnings have reduced and uncertainty regarding income has increased. It also said that the use of private vehicles for commercial transport has created unfair competition for licensed drivers who depend on app-based work for their livelihood.

Main demands of the union

The union has raised two main demands. The first demand is to issue immediate notification of minimum base fare for app-based transport services, which include autos, cabs, bike taxis and other aggregator-based services. The union has said that these fares should be finalized in consultation with recognized driver and worker unions and should follow the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines, 2025.

The second demand is that there should be a strict ban on the use of private, non-commercial vehicles for commercial passenger and goods transport. According to the union, this practice causes losses to licensed drivers and further increases income pressures in the sector.
