New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi left for Malaysia on Saturday on a two-day visit. Before leaving for Malaysia, he said that India is looking to strengthen defense and security ties with Malaysia and expand partnership in the fields of economic and innovation.
PM Modi said, “The historic relations between India and Malaysia have witnessed steady progress in recent years.” He said, “I look forward to my discussions with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and to further strengthening our comprehensive strategic partnership.” He said, “We aim to deepen our defense and security ties, enhance our economic and innovation partnership and expand our cooperation in new areas.”
Why is this tour special?
The purpose of this visit of PM Modi is to strengthen bilateral relations in the areas of trade, investment, energy and maritime security. This is the third visit of Prime Minister Modi to Malaysia. This is his first visit after India-Malaysia bilateral relations were upgraded to a comprehensive strategic partnership in August 2024.
During this period, PM Modi will hold bilateral talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. He will also interact with members of the Indian community as well as industry representatives. The 10th India-Malaysia CEO Forum will also be held during the Prime Minister’s visit.
According to the statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs, India and Malaysia have old relations based on historical, civilizational and cultural ties. ‘This relationship is further strengthened by the presence of 29 lakh Indian community in Malaysia, which is the third largest Indian community in the world.
What did the High Commissioner of India tell in Malaysia?
India’s High Commissioner to Malaysia B.N. Reddy, while speaking to news agency ANI, discussed in detail the future of this strategic partnership. He said that both the countries are working together under India’s ‘Ocean’ vision and broader Indo-Pacific vision. In the times to come, the focus will be on implementing the initiatives launched in 2024 and adding new dimensions of cooperation. For the first time in the history of India and Malaysia, both the countries have started ‘Security Dialogue’. This dialogue reflects the growing confidence in the field of defense and security.
At the same time, Malaysia is also very keen to connect with India in the field of digital economy. Reddy said that after the MoU on digital technology, ‘Malaysia-India Digital Council’ has been established, which will bring revolution in this sector.
