India’s Ministry of External Affairs has reiterated its commitment to ensure energy security for its citizens, saying that diversifying energy sources in line with market conditions and international circumstances is an important part of India’s strategy. This statement comes on America’s claim that India has agreed to stop importing Russian oil. The US has been accusing Russia of using oil revenues for war.
What statement did the Foreign Ministry give?
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “As far as India’s energy sources are concerned, the government has publicly stated on several occasions that ensuring the energy security of 140 crore Indians is the government’s top priority.” He said, “Diversification of energy sources in line with objective market conditions and changing international scenarios is the fundamental basis of our strategy. All India’s steps depend on this.”
India will reduce tariffs on American industrial goods
The US has announced the elimination of additional 25 percent tariff imposed on Indian purchases of Russian oil. Under the trade agreement with the US, India will reduce or eliminate tariffs on all US industrial goods and various food and agricultural products. These include dry grains, red sorghum for animal feed, dry fruits, fresh and processed fruits etc. This agreement has reduced some tension between the two countries.
India free to buy oil from any supplier
Earlier, Russian spokesperson Dmitry Peskov had said that India is free to buy oil from any supplier. He acknowledged that India has always been receiving petroleum products from many countries and said, “We do not see anything new in this. It is part of India’s strategy to diversify energy sources in line with global market conditions and changing international scenarios.”
