Special significance of Mahashivratri in Ujjain
Mahashivratri festival is celebrated in a special way in Ujjain, the city of Baba Mahakal. Baba Mahakal was cremated at 3 in the morning. Before this, Baba was bathed with Panchamrit i.e. milk, curd, ghee, sugar and honey. After this, sandalwood was applied and fragrant liquids were offered. She was also decorated with Baba’s favorite Vijaya (Bhang). After this, Baba was covered with white clothes and then the process of incinerating Baba started. After bathing in the ashes, Baba was burnt to ashes with the sound of cymbals, drums and conch shells.
There will be incineration tomorrow afternoon
In the month of Phalgun, there is a great celebration of marriage i.e. Mahashivratri in the courtyard of Rajadhiraj. On this occasion, Shiv Navratri festival is celebrated, in which Baba is decorated as a groom by applying turmeric and sandalwood for 9 days. During these nine days, 9 different adornments of Baba are done and then Mahashivratri is celebrated. On the next day of Shivratri, Baba’s head is decorated like a groom. This is the notable day when Bhasma Aarti is performed once a year in the afternoon. The decorated Baba’s face is later distributed as Prasad. Devotees, captivated by the charm of God, consider themselves blessed by receiving the things received as Prasad. The flowers found in the sky take with them even the flower petals. It is believed that keeping these flowers in the house brings happiness and peace throughout the year. Money and grains also remain full.
South facing Jyotirlinga in Ujjain
Lord Shiva is present in Ujjain in the form of ghostly Mahakal. This is the only Jyotirlinga among the twelve Jyotirlingas, whose posture is towards the south. The morning and evening of this city, completely painted in the colors of Lord Mahakaleshwar, look as if the creator himself has decorated it by bathing it with drops of nectar. This is Baba Mahakal on whom ashes are offered daily.
