ByteDance recently introduced video generation tool Seedance 2.0

What is the news?

Hollywood organizations are strongly opposing ByteDance’s new Artificial Intelligence (AI) video model Cedance 2.0. Critics say it has increasingly become a means of copyright infringement on a large scale. Introduced earlier this week, the updated model is currently available to Chinese users of ByteDance’s Jianying app. The company says that it will soon be available to users of its CapCut app worldwide.

This facility is available in the model

Like OpenAI’s Sora, Seidense also lets users create short videos using simple text prompts. The duration of these videos is limited to 15 seconds, but despite this, concerns are spreading in the film industry. Soon after launch, users began sharing videos featuring real actors and copyrighted characters, raising questions about how much oversight or content control the tool implements.

Concern increased after this video went viral

A short video created by a model has gone viral, showing a fabricated video of a fight between Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, which was allegedly created using a brief prompt. Hollywood film Deadpool’s screenwriter Rhett Rees reacted sharply on this video, writing on X, “I’m sad to say this. Perhaps, our future is now bleak.”

What is the danger of the model?

The Motion Picture Association issued a statement on behalf of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Charles Rivkin calling on ByteDance to immediately stop its infringing practices. Rivkin accused Seidens 2.0 of making large-scale unauthorized uses of US copyrighted works. It also warned that the lack of effective safeguards weakens copyright law and puts millions of American jobs at risk.

Disney sent notice to the company

The Human Artistry Campaign, representing a coalition of Hollywood unions and trade groups, called the model an attack on every creator around the world. The actors’ union SAG-AFTRA also condemned this apparent violation by Cedense 2.0. According to reports, the video produced by Seidens features Disney-owned characters – Spider-Man, Darth Vader and Grogu. It is said that for this reason Disney has sent a notice to ByteDance.
