UN chief Antonio Guterres calls India the right place for global AI talks

What is the news?

India AI Impact Summit 2026 is going to start from Monday (16 February) in New Delhi. More than 2 lakh participants are expected to attend the 5-day event, which will run till February 20. This will be the fourth global AI summit in the international AI Summit series. Earlier, United Nations (UN) Chief Antonio Guterres, while giving an important statement, has termed India as a good place for global AI talks.

What statement did Guterres give?

Guterres at UN Headquarters PTI Speaking to India Today, he congratulated India for organizing the ‘India AI Impact Summit 2026’ and emphasized that Artificial Intelligence (AI) should serve all humanity. Describing India as a highly successful emerging economy with growing influence in global affairs, he said, “India is the best-suited country to host an important global discussion on AI at present.”

AI should not be limited to superpowers- Guterres

Guterres said, “AI should not become a tool controlled only by the most developed countries or dominated by the two global superpowers. It would be unacceptable if the benefits of AI were limited to a few countries. Instead, countries in the global South should also benefit from this powerful technology.” According to him, AI should become a universal tool that can be used to promote development, innovation and progress globally.

Guterres will also attend India AI Impact Summit

The India AI Impact Summit 2026, to be held from 16 to 20 February, will be the first AI summit to be held in the global south. The main focus of this program will be on topics like people, planet and progress. Guterres is also likely to attend this summit along with French President Emmanuel Macron, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayan and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei.
