A court in Koppal district in Karnataka on Monday sentenced three people to death in a 2025 gangrape and murder case. The District and Sessions Court at Gangavati had found the accused guilty of gang rape of an Israeli female tourist and another woman and murder of a male tourist. The judge awarded death sentence to Mallesh alias Handi Malla (22), Sai alias Chaitanyasai (21) and Sharanappa alias Sharanbasavaraj (27) in cases including murder.
The crime was committed on the night of March 6, 2025.
The incident took place on the night of March 6, 2025, 4 kilometers away from the UNESCO World Heritage Site Hampi. The Israeli female tourist (27) along with her homestay mistress (29) and three male fellow tourists from the US, Odisha and Maharashtra were sitting listening to music on the banks of the Tungabhadra Canal. Then three people reached there on a motorcycle and asked for directions to the petrol pump and asked for money. The situation worsened when the group refused to pay the money and attacked the tourists.

The accused pushed the three male tourists into the canal and took the opportunity to rape the Israeli female tourist and the homestay owner. The attackers looted mobile phones and cash from the victims and fled. In the incident, two male tourists swam out, while the body of the tourist from Odisha was found the next day. The incident had raised concerns about the safety of tourists in the country. The accused got punishment after 11 months.
