Countless religious places in Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand, also known as Devbhoomi or the land of the gods. There are many world famous temples here. There is a constant flow of devotees throughout the year. Among the countless religious places visited by devotees in Uttarakhand, the most special is the Char Dham Yatra.

Know when Char Dham Yatra opens

This yatra or pilgrimage is to four holy sites situated high in the Himalayas, Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. These temples, built at high altitude, remain closed for about six months every year, opening in summer (April or May) and closing with the onset of winter (October or November).

Char Dham Yatra should be completed in a clockwise direction

It is believed that Char Dham Yatra should be completed in a clockwise direction. Therefore, the pilgrimage starts from Yamunotri, moves towards Gangotri, via Kedarnath and finally ends at Badrinath. This journey can be completed by road or by air (helicopter services are available).

Pilgrimage to Kedarnath and Badrinath

Some devotees also undertake Do Dham Yatra or pilgrimage to the two temples Kedarnath and Badrinath. The Yamunotri Temple, located in a narrow valley near the source of the Yamuna River (the second most sacred Indian river after the Ganges) in Uttarkashi district, is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna.

Char Dham Yatra is as divine as it is difficult.

Uttarkashi district also has Gangotri, dedicated to Goddess Ganga, the holiest of all Indian rivers. Kedarnath is in Rudraprayag district, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Badrinath, which is home to the sacred Badrinarayan Temple, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The Char Dham Yatra is as divine as it is difficult, but it satisfies the soul.
