Ilayaraja is one of the legendary music directors of India. Ilayaraja has given many wonderful songs. But lately Ilayaraja has been in the news more for his copyright cases than his music. Not only has Ilayaraja filed copyright cases against several movies one after the other, orders have also come in favor of Ilayaraja in several cases. But now the same copyright weapon has backfired on Ilayaraja.

Ilayaraja, a famous music company Saregama filed a case in the Delhi High Court. Saregama had filed a complaint that Ilayaraja had sold the songs owned by him to various companies including Amazon Music, iTunes and some production companies.

The Delhi High Court, which heard Saregama’s complaint, ordered that Ilayaraja has no rights over the songs of 130 films owned by Saregama. Not only that, the music of any movie is the primary right holder of the producer of that movie, and the music companies who get the rights from him are also the right holders. The court said that only if the contract is otherwise, then someone else is entitled.

Ilayaraja seems to have lost the rights to 130 movies in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. Ilayaraja had also sold movie songs under his title to various third party music apps. But now Ilayaraja has lost the rights of many songs due to the Saregama case.

Ilayaraja has been filing copyright cases against several movies and singers for the past few years. He had also given a notice to his close friend SP Balasubrahmanyam not to sing the songs directed by him in the live show. Recently ‘Manjumel Boys’, ‘Dude’, ‘Good Bad Ugly’ have filed a case against some other movies. Ilayaraja has also filed a case against Sony Music, Amazon Music, Saregama and some other companies.
