The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has busted a major international oil smuggling racket in the Western Sea off Mumbai. Coast Guard has seized 3 suspicious oil tankers near Mumbai coast. In a high-tech operation, the Coast Guard intercepted three foreign ships carrying large quantities of oil and oil-based cargo. According to the Coast Guard, these foreign ships used to take cheap oil from war-torn countries like Russia-Iran and supply it to motor tankers in international waters through mid-sea transfer. In this way smugglers earned huge profits and also avoided taxes and duties payable to the coastal countries.

What is the whole matter?

In fact, on February 5, about 100 nautical miles west of Mumbai, Indian Coast Guard ships intercepted three suspicious ships. After this, the specialist boarding team of ICG conducted a thorough search of the ships. After scrutiny of electronic data, verification of documents and interrogation of the crew, the entire chain of smuggling and the entire modus operandi of the criminals came to light.

Racket exposed through high-tech surveillance

Coast Guard’s technology based surveillance system first detected a motor tanker carrying out suspicious activity in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Subsequently, through digital investigation and data pattern analysis, two other ships were identified, which were illegally transferring oil-based cargo at sea.

Ships suspected to be linked to Iran

The IMO numbers of these ships match those of ships sanctioned by the US and are suspected to have links to Iran. According to the information, the ships had changed their names and flags to hide their identities. However, Iran’s National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) has denied any connection with these ships. According to sources, the names of these worlds are Stellar Ruby, Asphalt Star and Al Jafzia.
