What is the news?
Almost all the players of Pakistan cricket team in T20 World Cup 2026 have registered for the mega auction of ‘The Hundred’ to be held in London on March 11 and 12. These players also include Pakistani captain Agha Salman, Shaheen Afridi, Sam Ayub and Usman Tariq. A total of 711 players included in the auction list include domestic and international cricketers from Pakistan as well as players from all other countries except India.
Will Pakistani players find buyers?
bbc sport According to reports, Indian-owned franchises may ignore Pakistani players in the auction. 6 out of 8 teams have links with Indian companies. The owners of these teams will refrain from bidding on any of the 63 Pakistani players included in the auction. These 6 teams include London Spirit, MI Oval (Reliance Industries), Manchester Supergiants (RPSG Group), Southern Brave (GMR Group), Sunrisers Leeds (Sun TV) and Welsh Fire (American Sanjay Govil).
4 teams of ‘The Hundred’ are related to IPL
Of the 6 teams associated with India, 4 have direct links with the Indian Premier League (IPL). These include Mumbai Indians (MI), Delhi Capitals (DC), Lucknow Supergiants (LSG) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). These teams, along with other Indian owners, have avoided buying Pakistani players in foreign leagues. These teams have taken similar steps in SA20 and ILT20. Currently only one ILT20 team, Desert Vipers, has a Pakistani player in their roster.
Only teams that stay away from IPL will bet on Pakistani players.
According to BBC, a senior official of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has indicated to an agent that interest in their Pakistani players will be limited only to teams that have no connection with the IPL. This situation has been described as ‘an unwritten rule’ in Indian-invested T20 leagues. However, ECB chief executive Richard Gould said last year that players from all countries would be selected for all teams.
ECB spokesperson also issued a statement
“The Hundred welcomes men and women from all over the world. We hope all eight teams will share the same sentiment,” an ECB spokesperson said. He also revealed that around 1,000 players from 18 countries have registered for The Hundred auction. These include more than 50 players from Australia. Similarly, players from other countries including South Africa, New Zealand, Pakistan and West Indies are also involved.
