Bengaluru: Lokayukta police in Karnataka on Saturday caught BJP MLA Dr. Chandru Lamani red handed while taking bribe. BJP MLA from Shirahatti assembly constituency Chandru Lamani and his two associates were arrested while accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh in Lakshmeshwar town of Gadag district. Taking pleasure in the arrest of the BJP MLA, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Congress leader DK Shivakumar told ANI that BJP people cannot be corrupt because the leaders of this party are the most honest. He said that the Lokayukta might have received wrong information.

What did the Lokayukta police say on the arrest of the MLA?

According to the Lokayukta police, Vijay Poojar, a contractor, had complained that the MLA and his associates had demanded a total bribe of Rs 11 lakh for works related to the Minor Irrigation Department (such as building retaining walls on the roadside). On this complaint, the police laid a trap and caught him at Balaji Hospital at around 2:15 pm on Saturday while taking the first installment of Rs 5 lakh. Lokayukta Police has registered a case in this regard and action has been taken against the MLA and his associates under Section 7(a) and 7(A) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

‘Are BJP leaders not the most honest in the country?’

On the arrest of the BJP MLA, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said tauntingly, ‘Aren’t BJP leaders the most honest in the country? BJP people cannot be corrupt. You may have been given some wrong information. After the Lokayukta gives his statement, I will give my comments. BJP leaders are corruption free. The Lokayukta might have received some wrong information. Shivkumar also targeted BJP’s position in Assam. He said that there is a big anti-incumbency wave against BJP in Assam and people want to change the government.

‘BJP is becoming weak and losing in Assam’

DK Shivakumar said, ‘If BJP was strong in Assam then why would it try to include our former state Congress president Bhupen Kumar Bora in the party? None of our workers went with them. It is clear from this that BJP is becoming weak and losing. Bhupen Kumar Bora is going to join BJP on 22 February. He had recently resigned from Congress. This development is considered very important amid the preparations for the Assam Assembly elections. Let us tell you that DK Shivkumar is Congress’s observer for Assam assembly elections.
