An emergency landing of the Pawan Hans helicopter going from Port Blair, the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands to Mayabunder, was made in the middle of the sea. It is a matter of relief that in this incident, 2 crew members and 3 passengers aboard the helicopter are safe. Efforts are being made to take out the helicopter from the water.

Pawan Hans is India’s largest government helicopter company. You can think of it as a sky bus service, which goes to those places where trains or big airplanes cannot reach. It was established in 1985 and its main work is to connect the remote areas of the country.

This company mainly does three big works-

  1. First, it transports workers to subsea oil wells (such as ONGC’s platforms).
  2. Second, it facilitates movement of people to mountains and islands, such as Andaman and Nicobar and north-eastern states.
  3. Third, it provides helicopter services for difficult religious pilgrimages like Kedarnath and Mata Vaishno Devi.

Pawan Hans has more than 40 helicopters and is headquartered in Noida. In areas like Andaman, it is called the ‘lifeline’ because it makes travel between islands very easy and short.

Emergency landing of SpiceJet flight

At the same time, SpiceJet’s Delhi-Leh flight suffered a technical glitch shortly after takeoff, due to which the plane had to make an emergency landing back at Delhi Airport instead of going to Leh. This emergency landing was made due to a fault in engine number 2 of the aircraft. There were about 150 passengers on this plane.
