Daily UPI transactions hit new record in February

What is the news?

Daily Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions in the country hit a new record in February, but the total monthly volume declined slightly compared to January. National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) data showed that average daily transaction volume rose to Rs 72.80 crore in February, the highest level since the launch of the platform. Besides, the daily transaction value also increased rapidly reaching close to Rs 1 lakh crore.

The payment figures have been like this

According to NPCI, the total number of monthly transactions stood at 20.39 billion, down from January’s 21.7 billion, as the number of days was lower in February, yet the intensity of usage continued to increase. The average daily transaction value increased to about Rs 95,857 crore, compared to about Rs 91,387 crore in January. The annual growth in volume stood at about 26.6 percent, while the transaction value increased by more than 22 percent.

Tremendous growth since inception

The continued growth in daily usage highlights how UPI has transformed from a peer-to-peer payments tool to the backbone of India’s consumption economy. At the beginning of 2022, there were an average of about 15 crore daily transactions in the country. This figure has now increased almost 5 times in 4 years, reflecting its widespread use in retail payments, small merchants, utility payments and recurring transactions.
