Congress Statement on Khamenei: Congress on Sunday strongly condemned the ‘targeted killing’ of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei by the US and Israel. The party expressed its condolences to the people of Iran and the Shia community around the world. Citing Article 51 of the Constitution in its statement, the Congress said that India’s foreign policy is based on peaceful resolution of disputes through dialogue and respect for international law. The party said, ‘These principles, equality of all countries, non-interference in other countries and promotion of peace, are the core values of Indian civilization.’
‘This is a violation of the UN Charter’
Congress further said, ‘For this reason, the ongoing conflict in West Asia is completely against our idea of ’Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, Mahatma Gandhi’s policy of non-violence and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s policy of non-alignment.’ Congress expressed concern over the use of force to destabilize the governments in Iran and Venezuela. The party believes that this is the rebirth of the ‘old policies of changing the government and the unilateral attitude of force’. Congress said, ‘This violates the UN Charter, especially Article 2(4), which clearly prohibits the use or threat of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.’
‘Attack on the spirit of international rules’
The party said, ‘This is also a violation of Article 2 (7), which prevents interference in the internal affairs of a country. The targeted assassination of a sitting head of state is an attack on the spirit of these international rules. Sovereignty is unconditional, and political legitimacy cannot be created by force.’ Congress reiterated that the citizens of every country have the inalienable right to decide their own political future. The party said, ‘No external power has the right to change the government or decide the leader of any country. “Such action is imperialism and inconsistent with a true rules-based international order.”

Iranian media reported that Khamenei’s daughter, grandson, daughter-in-law and son-in-law were also killed in the attack. Iran has declared 40 days of public mourning over the death of its Supreme Leader. There is immense tension in the entire area after the attacks launched by America and Israel on Iran on Saturday.
