The death toll in the violent protests in Pakistan against the death of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has reached 35. The death toll of protesters is being reported from many cities including Islamabad and Karachi, where there were clashes with police and security forces during the protests. US Marine Corps security troops and Sindh Police personnel opened fire on protesters in Karachi.
Most deaths in Karachi
According to media reports, most of the protesters have died in Karachi. Protesters had entered the US Consulate complex in Karachi and pelted stones. 16 people have died here. Apart from this, 7 people were killed in Gilgit, 6 in Skardu and 6 in Islamabad. There is news of some people being killed in Lahore also. Less than 20 deaths have been confirmed so far by the Government of Pakistan.
Curfew imposed in Gilgit-Baltistan
Amid deteriorating law and order situation in the country, the Gilgit-Baltistan government ordered curfew. It demanded deployment of Pakistani troops in some parts of the region. The Home and Prison Department has expressed apprehension that large-scale protests triggered by the developments in Iran may further increase the unrest. An emergency has been declared in all hospitals of the province to deal with the people injured in the violence in Punjab province.
