What is the news?
It has been 6 days since the ongoing war between America, Israel and Iran. The attacks are still continuing. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has got the support of American lawmakers. A bill brought in the US Parliament to limit the war in Iran has not been approved. This bill, which limits the powers of the President, demanded that it be necessary to obtain the approval of Congress (Parliament) before military action.
53 MPs against the proposal, 47 in favor
53 votes were cast against the proposal in Parliament. At the same time, 47 MPs supported the proposal. Given the Republican Party’s slight majority in Parliament, expectations of the proposal’s passage were already low. All Republican lawmakers except one voted against the proposal. Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky supported the proposal, crossing party lines. Likewise, all Democrats except Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania supported it.
What did the MPs say?
Republican Senator Jim Risch of Idaho said, “This is not an endless war. It’s going to end very soon.” Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said, “This vote will decide whether lawmakers stand with the American people tired of endless wars in the Middle East or with President Trump and Secretary of Defense Hegseth.” Republican leader John Barrasso said, “Democrats are trying to stop the president. The real issue is dismantling Iran’s nuclear program.”
What were the provisions in the bill?
If the bill had passed, Trump would have been required to seek congressional approval before any major attack on Iran. Democrats argued that Trump’s actions were another example of his disregard for Congress’s authority to use military force, as Trump lacked a clear strategy for moving forward and by doing so broke another promise like many in the past.

Under the US Constitution, the President is the ‘Commander-in-Chief’, but the power to formally declare war rests with Parliament (Congress). According to the ‘War Powers Resolution’ Act of 1973, the President is required to obtain approval from Congress for any military action. The army deployed without approval will have to be withdrawn within 60 days. As long as the conflict continues, the President must constantly consult with Parliament.
