The Narcotics Control Bureau has busted a large international drug trafficking network involving Nepal, India and Sri Lanka. In this action, 77.60 kg hashish oil and 2 kg charas have been recovered, the estimated value of which is said to be around Rs 10 crore. Two cars, a motorcycle and a fishing boat were also seized during the operation. So far, five people have been arrested in this case, including a Sri Lankan refugee. This action was taken under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a drug-free India and the instructions of the Union Home Minister.
The Chennai zonal unit of NCB along with the Hyderabad zonal unit conducted the multi-state coordinated operation. During this period, the drug smuggling network spread from Nepal to India and then to Sri Lanka was destroyed.
Hashish transported from Nepal to India
On March 3, 2026, based on credible information, a team of NCB Hyderabad stopped a Tata Safari Storme car near Racal Toll Plaza on Bengaluru-Hyderabad Highway in Telangana. During the search, 2 kg of hashish was recovered from specially made secret mines in the vehicle. In this case, one person resident of Delhi and one resident of Uttar Pradesh were arrested. Preliminary investigation has revealed that this charas and about 78 kg of hashish oil was brought to India from Kathmandu, Nepal through Sonauli India-Nepal border.
78 kg hashish oil recovered
The accused had already delivered the consignment of hashish oil to Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu, from where there was a plan to send it to Sri Lanka by sea route. On receiving the information, the NCB Chennai team took action and arrested three people and recovered about 78 kg of hashish oil from their possession. With this the total number of arrested people associated with the network increased to five.

Fishing boat also seized
Investigation revealed that the smugglers were going to deliver this consignment to the receiver in Sri Lanka through mid-sea transfer in the sea near Tuticorin coast. A fishing boat was to be used for this. NCB, with the assistance of Indian Coast Guard, intercepted and seized a suspected fishing boat near the International Maritime Boundary Line, thereby foiling an attempt at international smuggling through sea route.
Mastermind associated with Sri Lanka
Investigation has revealed that the ultimate receiver of this network is a Sri Lankan citizen based in Sri Lanka, who had provided financial help and coordination to transport the drug consignment from Nepal to Sri Lanka. NCB is now carrying out further investigation to identify the remaining members of this international gang, financial transactions and dismantle the entire network.
Big action of NCB this year
Since the beginning of this year, NCB Chennai has seized about 973.35 kg of ganja, 87.64 kg of hashish oil and 1.045 kg of amphetamine. 9 people have been arrested in these cases. The total value of the seized narcotics is estimated to be around Rs 12.5 crore. Also, in the previous cases this year, eight accused have been sentenced in three cases.
