The Indian cricket team is all set to play the final match of T20 World Cup 2026 against the New Zealand cricket team at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday (8 March). By winning this match, India will become the first team to win 3 T20 World Cup titles and capture the trophy twice in a row. Let’s take a look at India’s past performances in T20 World Cup finals.

India won the first title by defeating Pakistan in 2007

Under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India won the first T20 World Cup in 2007. In the final it defeated Pakistan cricket team by 5 runs. Batting first in Johannesburg, India scored 157 runs with a half-century from Gautam Gambhir (75). In reply, Pakistan team could score only 152 runs even after the innings of Misbah-ul-Haq (43). RP Singh and Irfan Pathan from India took maximum 3-3 wickets in their name.

Sri Lanka had defeated India in the year 2014

Under the captaincy of Dhoni, India won five consecutive matches and made it to the final of the T20 World Cup 2014. However, the Sri Lankan cricket team defeated it in the final match played in Dhaka. India had scored 130/4 with a half-century from Virat Kohli (77) against the tight bowling of Sri Lankan bowlers. In reply, Sri Lanka achieved the target in just 17.5 overs and captured their first title.

India won the title by defeating South Africa in 2024

In the T-20 World Cup 2024, India won the title under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma and captured the trophy for the second time. Batting first in the final match played in Barbados against the South African cricket team, India scored a score of 176/7 on the basis of a half-century by Virat Kohli (76). In reply, the Proteas team could only score 169/8 runs in front of the excellent bowling of Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya.
