What is the news?
PhonePe has launched its ‘on-the-go’ RuPay National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), in line with India’s ‘One Nation One Card’ initiative. It aims to digitize public transport payments across the country. The card facilitates tap-and-pay transactions on NCMC-enabled services including metro, bus, train, toll and parking. The card allows offline payments without the need for internet connectivity. This prepaid card stores value directly on its chip.

Where can it be used?
According to PhonePe, the cards are issued instantly, increasing convenience for daily commuters. Initially the card will be available at ticket counters of Hyderabad Metro in partnership with L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Limited (LTMRHL). Passengers can purchase and top-up the card through UPI, cash or card after OTP verification of the phone number. It can be used at NCMC-enabled stations in cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bengaluru.
How much balance can be kept in the card?
“The card enables instant ‘tap-and-pay’ transactions with all public transport providers in India. It also works offline using the existing balance,” said Deep Aggarwal, head of payments at the company. The launch marks its strategic entry into the transit segment, complementing its existing digital ticketing, passes and smart card recharge services. In this, you can maintain a maximum balance of Rs 2,000 and do offline transactions up to Rs 500.
