There was a heated debate in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday over the no-confidence motion brought by the opposition parties to remove Speaker Om Birla. Initiating the discussion on the no-confidence motion moved by Congress MP Mohammad Javed, Gaurav Gogoi made it clear that this is not a step taken against any particular person, but to protect parliamentary dignity and the Constitution.

“Mike is being made a weapon”

Gaurav Gogoi raised serious questions on the functioning of the House and alleged that at present ‘Mike’ is being used as a weapon in the Lok Sabha. He said that whenever Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi or other opposition leaders want to raise important issues, they are not allowed to speak and their mikes are switched off. Gogoi said, “We have no pleasure in bringing this motion, but to maintain public confidence in the House, we have to follow this ‘dharma’.”

Heated exchange between ruling party and opposition

During the discussion, Gogoi mentioned many old incidents. Gogoi claimed that during the President’s address in February, when the Leader of the Opposition stood up to speak, disruptions were deliberately created 20 times. Gogoi described Kiren Rijiju as the most disruptive Parliamentary Affairs Minister in future records.

Home Minister Amit Shah took a jibe at Gogoi, saying he agreed that Rijiju created disruption, but a more irresponsible opposition had never been seen in the history of the country.

Border security, trade agreements under siege

The Congress leader also placed national security and foreign policy issues on the table of the House. He alleged that when tanks from the neighboring country were coming to the border, the country’s leadership proved weak. At the same time, he also supported the issue raised by Rahul Gandhi, who claimed that the trade agreement with America was done under some pressure. Gogoi said that even when the opposition leader was ready to verify the facts, the ruling party tried to stop him from speaking.
