New Delhi: Chief Justice of Supreme Court (CJI) Surya Kant has made a big comment while hearing the case related to the appointment of DGP in West Bengal. CJI Surya Kant said that ‘West Bengal government is more busy in sending DGP to Rajya Sabha’. Actually, former DGP of West Bengal Rajiv Kumar has been elected to Rajya Sabha as a member of TMC.

The court had said these things in the last hearing

Earlier, on February 5, 2026, the Supreme Court had said that the states were avoiding the appointment of a regular Director-General of Police (DGP) with a two-year fixed term and instead choosing an acting police chief of their choice, which is a violation of a 20-year-old Supreme Court decision. In a judgment in the Prakash Singh case in 2006, the court had made it clear that the office of the DGP should be kept separate from political or other external pressures and had warned governments against mixing politics and law enforcement.

Let us tell you that former DGP Rajiv Kumar will go to Rajya Sabha on TMC ticket. Rajiv Kumar’s career has been full of controversies. On February 3, 2019, a political development like never before happened in West Bengal, when Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee started an “indefinite strike” in the heart of Kolkata. This happened when a group of CBI officers arrived unannounced at the house of then Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar in connection with the Saradha deposit collection scam.
