Cricket, Cinema and Politics go hand in hand in India. Especially cricket and movies have a strong connection. But what’s more, with just a few days left for the start of the IPL 2026 season, there is a legal battle between the two South Indian giants. Sun Pictures, one of India’s leading production houses, has filed a complaint against IPL team Chennai Super Kings. The reason for this is Rajinikanth’s movie ‘Jailor’. What is the controversy? Here is the information.

On March 1, 2026, Chennai Super Kings shared a promotional video on social media to launch their new jersey. The video used popular songs, background music and dialogues from Sun Pictures’ movies ‘Jailor’ and ‘Jailor 2’ and ‘Coolie’ during MS Dhoni’s entry and jersey unveiling, much to Sun Pictures’ displeasure.

For this reason, Sun Pictures has gone to court and has filed a case against CSK in the Madras High Court. A lawyer appearing for Sun Pictures said all the rights are with Sun Pictures as per the agreement with Anirudh Ravichander, the music director of these films. CSK used these without any prior permission. This video is being used to sell jerseys and other merchandise, which is a copyright infringement for commercial purposes. He requested that the Sun Pictures team should pay a compensation of Rs 1 crore to CSK and issue a permanent restraining order against the use of these songs.

The team of lawyers appearing for the Chennai team has already removed the offending videos from its official social media accounts. Despite using such songs for the past three years, Sun Network had not objected earlier. He assured the court that in the future, he will not use any music without permission or license from Sun Pictures. After hearing both sides, Justice Senthilkumar Ramamurthy directed CSK Limited to submit an affidavit in this regard and adjourned the hearing to March 16.

Kavya Maran, the daughter of the owner of Sun Pictures, is the owner of Sunrisers Hyderabad, another major team in the IPL. The Hyderabad team is part of the Sun Networks business. So this is a fight between SRH and CSK in a way.
