Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk spoke candidly with wife Gitanjali after coming out of jail. He will remain under medical observation for the next 36 hours. Sharing a photo on social media platform X, Geetanjali said that she spoke openly with her husband after a long time. He was not worried about the clock. He also said that his family doctor has asked to keep Sonam under medical observation. Because of this he will remain in the hospital for the next 36 hours.
Gitanjali J Angmo, who lives in Ladakh, tweeted, “After a long time, spoke to Sonam Wangchuk candidly, without watching the horror in between, so that the 60 minutes spent in jail can be fully utilized! On the advice of our family doctor, we are taking him for a health checkup. He will be under medical observation for 36 hours in a good hospital.” Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and his wife Gitanjali live in Ladakh.
Sonam released from Jodhpur jail
Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was released from Rajasthan’s Jodhpur Central Jail on Saturday afternoon. The central government has decided to cancel Sonam’s custody with immediate effect. After this he has been released from jail. Sonam was jailed under the National Security Act and has already spent half of the custody period. After this the Central Government has decided to cancel his custody.
Why was Sonam detained?
Sonam Wangchuk was detained on 26 September 2025, two days after violent protests broke out in Leh demanding statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. Four people were killed and more than 45 people, including 22 policemen, were injured in the protests. He was detained under the National Security Act (Maintenance of Public Order) on the orders of the District Magistrate of Leh and then shifted to Jodhpur jail.
