Rajya Sabha Election Result Explained: The results of the elections held on March 16 for the Rajya Sabha, the country’s upper house, have come. In these elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party led alliance NDA performed amazingly and won 22 out of total 37 seats. This has further strengthened the position of NDA in Rajya Sabha. Let us tell you that Rajya Sabha elections are held every 2 years and the tenure of the members is 6 years. These elections were held in 10 states which include Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Telangana.

What were the results of the elections held on 11 seats?

Let us tell you that out of 37 seats which are going to be vacant in April, candidates were elected unopposed on 26 seats. Whereas, there was competition between candidates on the remaining 11 seats, which included 5 seats in Bihar, 4 seats in Odisha and 2 seats in Haryana. Voting on these seats lasted from 9 am to 4 pm, and counting of votes began at 5 pm. In Bihar, NDA won all 5 seats, while in Odisha, BJP won 2 seats, BJD won one seat and an independent candidate supported by BJP won one seat. Whereas in Haryana, both BJP and Congress got one seat each.

Who got what in the 26 uncontested seats?

Out of 26 seats on which candidates were elected unopposed, NDA got 13 seats. Of these, BJP alone won 7 seats. The remaining seats were won by allies including Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), RPI (A), NCP, AIADMK, PMK and UPPL. Of the 11 seats on which there was competition, NDA alone won 11 seats. If seen in this way, NDA has captured 24 out of 37 seats while other parties together could get only 13 seats.

NDA becomes more powerful in Rajya Sabha

After the elections on 37 seats, NDA’s position in Rajya Sabha has become stronger. This time, in the elections held on 37 Rajya Sabha seats, NDA has directly gained 7 seats. Earlier, NDA had only 15 seats in these seats, while INDIA alliance had 22 seats. Now the situation has completely changed, NDA now has 22 seats and the opposition is left with only 15 seats. Overall, these elections have strengthened the NDA’s position in the Rajya Sabha. At the same time, in important states like Bihar and Odisha, the opposition suffered losses due to cross-voting and other factors.

Now what is the new status of Rajya Sabha?

There are a total of 245 members in the Rajya Sabha, of which 233 are elected MPs while 12 are nominated by the President. To have a majority in the Rajya Sabha, 123 members are required, and the NDA already had more members than this. After the Rajya Sabha elections, the number of NDA members has now increased to 141, of which 106 are from BJP alone. At the same time, the number of members of INDIA alliance is 74 which includes 28 members of Congress, 13 of Trinamool, 8 of DMK and 4 of Samajwadi Party. Whereas, apart from the two alliances, there are 10 members of AAP, 7 of YSRCP and 6 of BJP.
