After the recently held Rajya Sabha elections in Odisha, political turmoil has intensified. The Congress party has taken strict action against its three MLAs – Ramesh Jena, Dashrathi Gamang and Sophia Firdous and suspended them. Regarding this entire matter, Congress Legislature Party leader Ramchandra Kadam has also sent two important letters to the Assembly Speaker, in which further action has been demanded.
Demand for action under anti-defection law
In the first letter, the Assembly Speaker has been requested to initiate action against these three MLAs under the anti-defection law. The letter said that during the Rajya Sabha elections, these MLAs cross-voted despite the party whip, which can be considered a violation of the provisions of the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution. It also mentioned that such action not only weakens party discipline but is also considered against the mandate given by the voters. Therefore, the Speaker has been requested to take cognizance of the matter and start the necessary investigation and disqualification process soon.
Demand for change in seating arrangement
In the second letter, a request has been made regarding the status of these MLAs within the Assembly after suspension. It said that since the three leaders are no longer part of the Congress Legislative Party, it is necessary to change their seating arrangement in the House. The letter also argues that the change in seating arrangement will reflect the true party position in the House and will help in maintaining parliamentary order. The Speaker has been requested to take immediate action in this regard.
differences came out openly
The incident of cross voting has clearly exposed the ongoing differences within the Congress party. Calling this a step against the collective strategy of the organization, the party leadership said that maintaining discipline is extremely important, especially when the party is preparing for the upcoming political contests.
Odisha’s politics heated up
This entire incident has heated up the politics of Odisha. On one hand, Congress wants to give the message of discipline and unity, while on the other hand, this matter can become an even bigger political issue through further legal and parliamentary process. In the coming days, everyone’s eyes will be on the Speaker’s decision and the reaction of political parties. (Report: Shubham Kumar)
