The Election Commission has recently announced the dates of assembly elections in 5 states and union territories. In the same sequence, assembly elections are also to be organized in the Union Territory of Puducherry. Let us tell you that in Puducherry, BJP and NR Congress are together under NDA alliance. However, just before the elections, controversy has emerged in the NDA alliance in Puducherry. Let us know the whole matter.
What is the demand of NR Congress?
Cracks have emerged within the NDA alliance in Puducherry ahead of the elections. The ruling NR Congress has put forward new demands to its ally, the Bharatiya Janata Party, further complicating the electoral pact. At the root of this tension is the NR Congress’s insistence that it should get a clear assurance from either Prime Minister Narendra Modi or Home Minister Amit Shah on granting full statehood to Puducherry. This is a long pending demand, which has once again gained political momentum ahead of the elections.
CM Rangaswami can go with Vijay
NR Congress has expressed strong opposition to the inclusion of industrialist Charles Martin-led ‘Lakshya Dravida Jannayak Katchi’ (LJK) in the NDA alliance. LJK is headed by lottery king Martin’s son. An aspect which the NR Congress leaders are not accepting politically. There is also a news that CM Rangaswamy, who has decided to separate from NDA, can announce a new alliance today or tomorrow by entering into an agreement with Vijay’s party TVK.
When are the elections in Puducherry?
The date of assembly elections in the Union Territory of Puducherry has been fixed by the Election Commission as 9 April 2026. Whereas, the election results will be released on May 4, 2026. The tenure of the current assembly in Puducherry ends on June 15. According to the data given by the Election Commission, the total number of voters in Puducherry is 9.44 lakh.
