Ukraine Embassy calls arrest of 6 citizens in UAPA case a conspiracy

What is the news?

The Ukraine Embassy has expressed concern over six of its citizens arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The embassy in Delhi said in its statement issued on Thursday that the initiation of this action appears to be motivated by information provided by the Russian side. The Embassy also expressed serious concern over the circumstances, which point to the potentially well-planned and politically motivated nature of this case.

What did the Ukrainian Embassy say?

“Considering the publicly available information in the case of the detention of six Ukrainian citizens, it indicates that the initiation of these proceedings was motivated by information provided by the Russian side. The Ukrainian Embassy in India expresses serious concern over the circumstances that point to the potentially well-planned and politically motivated nature of the case. Ukraine rejects allegations of the possible involvement of the Ukrainian state in supporting terrorist activities,” the embassy statement wrote.

Ukraine demands fair, transparent and neutral investigation

The embassy further wrote, “Ukraine insists that any terrorism-related allegations should be considered only on the basis of verified facts, transparent procedures and full intergovernmental cooperation. Ukraine emphasizes the need to ensure impartiality, transparency and neutrality in the investigation of the case. We look forward to cooperation. We hope that the Ukrainian authorities will ensure the legality, transparency and openness of the process, as well as proper observance of the rights of Ukrainian citizens in accordance with international law.”

Russia accused of causing division

“Ukraine has no interest in any activities that threaten India’s security. Ukraine consistently supports strengthening security, trust and cooperation with India. Russia is trying to create a wedge between Ukraine and India under all circumstances. The use of the case appears to be a deliberate attempt to defame Ukraine or create mistrust in Ukraine-India relations and damage the bilateral partnership,” the embassy wrote in its statement.

What is the matter of arrest?

According to the FIR lodged by the NIA, all 1 American and 6 Ukrainian nationals went to restricted areas in Mizoram in the northeast, illegally entered Myanmar and came in contact with some groups banned in India besides Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs). The accused trained armed groups, provided weapons and helped in drone operations. The allegations are consistent with the work of mercenaries. All are in judicial custody for 11 days.
