For the first time in the history of Himachal Pradesh, the budget has been cut. Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu on Saturday presented a budget of Rs 54,928 crore for the financial year 2026-27. He said the state would suffer a loss of more than Rs 8,000 crore annually by discontinuing the Revenue Deficit Grant (RDG). BJP MLAs also created ruckus on this issue. Now in Himachal, the salaries of all the MLAs including CM Sukhu will be cut for the next six months. Sukhu’s salary will be cut by 50 percent and other MLAs’ salaries will be cut by 30 percent. The deducted salary can be received later.

This is the first time in the state that the size of the budget has been cut. It has been reduced to Rs 54,928 crore as against Rs 58,514 crore in the current financial year, which is a decrease of Rs 3,586 crore.

Huge uproar during Sukhu’s budget speech

The revenue deficit grant was discontinued in early March. It is a financial assistance given by the Center to bridge the gap between the revenue and expenses of the state. During Sukhu’s budget speech, the chief minister accused the opposition of not supporting the state on the issue of closure of revenue deficit grant, which has hit the state budget and caused a loss of Rs 8,105 crore annually. “History will never forgive them,” he said. BJP members immediately reacted sharply to this. Opposition BJP members raised slogans and created disruption. During this time there was a lot of commotion.

It is wrong to compare Himachal with Uttarakhand-Assam: Sukhu

Sukhu, who was presenting his fourth budget, said it was wrong to compare Himachal Pradesh with Uttarakhand and Assam as Himachal is a hilly state with limited resources like water and forests. “Himachal is the lungs of North India and should get a ‘green bonus’, but instead the state’s revenue deficit grant has been stopped,” he said. He said that conflicts around the world are now affecting the state as well and due to the ongoing war between America, Israel and Iran, LPG prices are increasing. He said the state is expected to register a growth of 8.3 per cent for the current financial year, while the per capita income has increased by 9.8 per cent to Rs 2,83,626.

Cow milk Rs 61 per liter

Chief Minister Sukhu also announced a plan to develop an aerocity in Kangra and a provision of Rs 3,300 crore to acquire land to build an airport in the district. The state has also increased the milk purchase price by Rs 10, under which cow milk will now be purchased at Rs 61 per liter and buffalo milk at Rs 71 per liter. Sukhu announced a minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 100 per kg for fishes, which will benefit over 6,000 fishermen in the state. He also said that a Farmers Commission and Women Tourism Fund will be formed in the state.
