Your data can be stolen from your car’s connected technology.

What is the news?

The current connected car is like a mobile smartphone. The microphones, cameras and sensors installed in them are recording data ranging from your location to voice commands and driving patterns. This information reaches the servers of the companies, due to which your data can reach the wrong hands. If you are worried about your privacy, you can stay safe from this threat by changing the settings of your car.

infotainment system

Make these changes in the settings of the infotainment system

Most cars share data through touchscreen systems. For privacy, go to Settings and find the Privacy or Data Sharing option. Turn off the options given there like Share my data for research or Improve voice recognition. You can also disable location tracking from here. With this, your voice commands and driving data will not be sent to the company and there will be no risk of falling into the wrong hands.

smartphone connectivity

Does not give all access when connected to smartphone

If Google Assistant or Alexa is in-built in the car, it is always active to listen to your words. You can turn off the option of ‘Listen for wake words’ by going to Settings. The assistant will be activated only when the button on the steering wheel is pressed. When connected to the phone, allow only media access, not contacts or messages. Apart from this, you can turn off sync contacts by going to the Bluetooth settings of the phone.

Do this before selling the car

Car manufacturing companies also collect data through their apps. For this, go to the phone’s settings and check the permission of the app. If not required, change the microphone, location access and set it as per your convenience. If you are selling the car then do a master reset or factory reset. In this, your old location, home address, phone data will be completely deleted from the car.
