The central government said on Monday that 23 aircraft and helicopter accidents took place in the last five years. This information was given by Minister of State for Civil Aviation Muralidhar Mohol in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha. According to statistics, the rate of helicopter accidents last year was 0.53 per 10,000 flight hours, the highest in the last five years.

At the same time, the accident rate for non-scheduled fixed wing operator aircraft was 0.27 per 10,000 departures. A total of six accidents occurred last year, while three were recorded in 2024, four in 2023, four in 2022 and six in 2021.

Four helicopters become victims of accidents in 2025

Last year, there were four helicopter accidents, while one accident each occurred in scheduled operator (scheduled operator) and fixed wing (non-scheduled fixed wing operator) aircraft. In response to a question, the Minister said that the shortage of human resources in the Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has not had any negative impact on the security operations. More than 780 posts out of 1,630 sanctioned posts are vacant in the regulator.

Selection of 167 candidates under recruitment process

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, he said, ‘In the last few months, 167 candidates were selected under the recruitment process, out of which appointment letters were also issued to 106. A request has been made to UPSC for recruitment of 42 officers from the reserve panel. Direct recruitment proposals for 82 posts of various technical cadres for 2026 are under process. Along with this, Mohol also said that the vacant posts are being filled through short-term contractual appointments and the DGCA has a systematic security monitoring mechanism in place.
