Assembly elections are to be held in Assam next month. Meanwhile, state Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has made a big electoral gamble by intensifying the campaign for the upcoming assembly elections. Addressing a huge public meeting in Bajali on Thursday, Himanta announced that if BJP comes to power again, 5 lakh bighas of government land in the state will be freed from encroachers.
He said the encroachers had been taught a lesson over the past five years and their dominance over indigenous communities had been ‘substantially reduced’. He described most of these encroachers as ‘Miyas’ (a derogatory term for Bengali-speaking migrant Muslims). He said, “In the last five years we have made 1.5 lakh bighas of land encroachment free, but for the next five years our target will be to make 5 lakh bighas of government land encroachment free.”
“Committed to protect caste, soil and heritage”
CM Himanta said that only indigenous people will have rights on land in Assam. He said, “BJP is committed to protect ‘Jati, Mati aur Bheti’ (people, land and base) and we will not let anyone work against it. It is necessary to deal strictly with illegal immigrants for the survival of the native population and we will not compromise on this.”
Attacking Congress state president Gaurav Gogoi, Himanta Biswa Sarma said that his concept of new Greater Assam is unacceptable, as he (Gogoi) is indirectly suggesting that Bangladeshis and the people of the state have to live together. Sarma alleged that Gogoi and the Congress have always tried to give more importance to the ‘Miya’ community than the native Assamese people.
Voting for Assam elections on 9 April
He urged voters to support Dharmeshwar Roy of Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) and described the party’s alliance with the BJP as inseparable. He also campaigned for AGP candidate Deepak Kumar Das in the neighboring Barpeta constituency, where the nomination of Congress candidate Mahananda Sarkar was rejected. Elections for the 126-member assembly in Assam will be held on April 09 and counting of votes will take place on May 04.
